How to get started with PowerPoint

If using the web based version access Microsoft 365; your SharePoint account. 


1. Select Create

2. Select Create a presentation

2. Choose Blank presentation 

3. OR choose a Template to begin.




If you have installed Microsoft PowerPoint to your device, here are some PowerPoint basics to help you get started.


PowerPoint Basics

1. Opening PowerPoint

  • Open the app from your Start menu or search bar.
  • Choose Blank Presentation or a Template to begin.

2. Understanding the Interface

  • Slides Pane (left): Shows all your slides.
  • Main Slide Area (center): Where you design each slide.
  • Ribbon Toolbar (top): Contains tabs like Home, Insert, Design, Transitions, etc.

3. Creating Slides

  • Click New Slide (Home tab) to add a slide.
  • Choose different layouts (e.g., Title Slide, Two Content, Comparison).

4. Adding Content

  • Text: Click inside a text box and start typing.
  • Images: Go to Insert > Pictures to add images from your device or online.
  • Shapes/Icons: Use Insert > Shapes or Icons for visual elements.

5. Designing Slides

  • Use the Design tab to apply themes and customise colours/fonts.
  • Try Design Ideas for automatic layout suggestions.

6. Transitions & Animations

  • Transitions: Effects between slides (Transitions tab).
  • Animations: Effects on elements within a slide (Animations tab).

7. Presenting

  • Click Slide Show tab > From Beginning to start your presentation.
  • Use arrow keys or click to move through slides.
